IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE SUMMER WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM AT YEI.  PLEASE READ BEFORE DOWNLOADING AND SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION:

Dear youth/parent/guardian,

YEI is pleased to release our work experience application for the Summer of 2010. Unlike last summer, placements this summer are very limited. Last summer, YEI received federal stimulus funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) which allowed YEI to employ over 250 youth. Unfortunately, Congress did not pass a similar bill this year and therefore YEI will not be able to offer the large number of work experiences as we did last year. YEI continues its partnerships with Trimet, City of Portland and US Forest Service to offer summer programming to youth.

This summer, the following work experience opportunities are available:

Urban Rangers Program – Up to 20 youth will be selected for this program. The program runs from June 28 – August 20 (possibly later). Youth ages 16 to 24 are eligible to apply. Pay is $8.40/hour.

-          Applications are due June 4.

-          If you are interested in applying, please submit:

o   Completed YEI application, with all necessary signatures

o   Resume

o   One letter of recommendation (from a non-family member)

o   A high school/college transcript, or other document showing academic potential

-          Interested youth and parents are encouraged to attend on orientation in May (dates will be posted on YEI’s website at www.yei.org).

-          Youth selected for an interview will be called the week of June 7th for an interview. Do to the large number of applicants, YEI will not be able to call all youth.

Portland Youth Outdoor Exploration (PYOE) Program – 30 youth will be selected for this program. Programming is separated by gender. Each session lasts 5 weeks. Youth earn $30/day and one elective science credit. Youth ages 15 and 16 are eligible to apply.

-          Young women: YEI is not currently accepting applications. All positions have been filled with current program participants.

-          Young men: Urban League is still accepting applications. Please call 503.280.2600 for more information and to complete an application.

Trimet (First Step) 20 youth will be selected for this program. Youth ages 15-21 are eligible to apply. Youth will work 5 days a week for a total of 40 hours. Pay is $8.40/hour. Work will be June 28 – August 27. A separate orientation with Trimet is required. Dates will be posted on YEI’s website, once available.

-          Applications are due June 4.

-          Submit a YEI application and indicate that you are interested in this program by writing Trimet on the upper right hand corner of the application.

Unfortunately, YEI does not have funding to employ youth under the age of 15. At this time, we are not aware of other programs offering work experiences to younger youth.

Due to the large number of calls we are receiving, YEI is not able to respond to individual calls. If you have any questions that are not answered through this letter, please contact Rebecca Parker, Program Manager, at 503.280.1058. Calls will be returned within 48 hours.

Sincerely,

Bennie Boggan

Executive Director
